My list of songs written by Geoghegan which have entered the folk tradition now include (songs where I have completed my research have links, Roud number in brackets):<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  5. John Barleycorn is a hero bold<\/a> (2141)<\/li>
  6. Johnny we hardly knew ye<\/a> (3137)<\/li>
  7. Merry men of England<\/a> (13658)<\/li>
  8. Old Adam was Father of all<\/a> (12875)<\/li>
  9. Pat works on the railway<\/a> (208)<\/li>
  10. Rock the Cradle John <\/a>(357 and 7278)<\/li>
  11. Roger Ruff (2145)<\/a><\/li>
  12. The Hallelujah Band<\/a> (V10010)<\/li>
  13. The Lancashire Witches<\/a> (V8371)<\/li>
  14. They all have a mate but me<\/a> (1140)<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    I know that I\u2019m\nnot alone in feeling that many of the songs feel very \u201ctraditional\u201d and not\nlike songs that come from the Halls. Indeed, there are others who wrote for the\nHalls, like Harry Clifton, who have many more songs appearing in the Roud index\n(my searches show 37 for Clifton, 13 for Geoghegan). But many more of Clifton\nsongs have the feel that we might expect of a \u201cMusic Hall Song\u201d, like Pretty\nPolly Perkins of Paddington Green <\/em>or Isabella with the Gingham Umbrella.\n<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    (I maybe being\nunfair to Harry Clifton, and I\u2019ll have to investigate some of his songs more thoroughly).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    My initial posting <\/a>about Geoghegan now feels a little too suspicious. I think I was perhaps a little hasty in accusing him of doing an \u201cAP Carter\u201d and claiming authorship of traditional songs he didn\u2019t write.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Investigating\nthe songs above, so far, I can find no evidence of them appearing before the\n1860\/70s when Geoghegan was writing. I can find no evidence in the pages of the\nMusic Hall paper The Era<\/em>, challenging claims to authorship \u2013 and writers\nand performers seemed very quick to use those pages to challenge misuse or\nwrong authorship of their songs!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    So on balance\nmaybe Geoghegan did write all these songs\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
