He regularly appeared in the Birmingham Halls and often appeared in pantomime there. His hit songs, like Can’t Stop and They’re After Me were extremely popular at the time, but are no longer well-known today. He was still performing at the time of his death in 1922. Freeman was a founding member of The Grand Order of Water Rats and the first “King Rat”. The Order was founded by a group of friends from the Halls who gambled on horses, using their winnings to support fellow artistes suffering hard times. The Order evolved into a formal charitable organisation which still exists today.

As yet I have been unable to source any available recordings of the song.

Sources:

Entries in the Roud Indexes at the Vaughn Williams Memorial Library: https://archives.vwml.org/search/all:single[folksong-broadside-books]/0_50/all/score_desc/extended-roudNo_tr%3A22882

Kilgarrif Sing Us

Lyrics: monologues.co.uk

Sheet Music: https://search.worldcat.org/title/50230653

Harry Freeman:

Death Of Harry Freeman. | The Era | 02 August 1922 | British Newspaper Archive.

Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer | 03 August 1922 | British Newspaper Archive.

The Walsall’ Observer ; August 5 1922 | British Newspaper Archive.

This song reflects racist, misogynist and/or colonial ideas that were commonplace at the time it was first written and performed but are no longer acceptable today AKA She stood behind the parlor door First Published Writer/composer Roud RN22882 Music Hall Performers Folk performances Collected from the singing of:Beeforth, Jack; England : Yorkshire : 1974 Springhall, … Continue reading “She stood behind the parlour door”

[10,8

post-22632","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry","category-folksongs-from-halls","category-songs

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.7 -
