A song from the early 1920s remembered by a number of traditional singers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was originally an American song written by Tin Pan Alley song writers in tribute to the Irish-American actress Peggy O’Neil. The song was a hit throughout the English-speaking world, in the UK it became particularly associated with Dorothy Ward, a highly successful pantomime and Music Hall performer (see brief biography below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The song may seem a little sentimental, but it was often performed with so-called “patter verses” which introduced a strong element of comedy, for examples listen to the version by Billy Jones below, though be warned that the additional verses use discriminatory language that would not be acceptable today. The comedy element lives on in the huge number of parodies that remembered by the contributors to this Mudcat thread<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
