I'M GOING TO SING A SONG<\/strong>\n \nI'm going to sing a song to you this evening\nI've been a lovely singer since my birth\nWhen you hear my pretty notes a-ringing\nYou'll say I have the finest voice on earth\nBefore the King I once appeared\nWhen I sang he loudly cheered.\n\nHe sent for me, and said, 'You are a marvel\nAt singing you have really got the knack.'\nThen from his tie he took a diamond scarf-pin\nAnd smiled at me, and then he put it back.<\/em>\n\nPat at carrying bricks worked like a negro\nI've never seen a chap work so before\nSaid I to him, 'Why do you work so hard, Pat?\nYou seem to do the work of three or four.'\nSaid he, 'My boy, you've touched the spot\nYou think I'm working but I'm not.'\n\nSaid he, 'While I keep running up this ladder\nWith bricks upon my head, the dodge is fine\nThe boss, the silly ass, he thinks I'm working\nBut I'm carrying up the same bricks all the time.'<\/em>\n\nThe folks next door to us are fond of joking\nThey're always trying to play some joke on me\nTo summons them in Court was my intention\nIf I could get some evidence, you see\nOn our garden seat they placed a nail\nMy wife sat on it, and turned pale.\n\nShe jumped about and shouted, 'Pull it out, dear'\nBut I said, 'Leave it there, that's simply great\nI'll go and get a summons in the morning\nWe've something now to show the magistrate.<\/em>\n\nMy Uncle brought a donkey home last Tuesday\nAnd as a special favour said to me\nThat if I'd pay him half of what it cost him\nThat donkey I could share with him, you see\nI must have been clean off my head\nFor when he got my oof he said,\n\n'Of course you pay for all the food to keep him.'\nI said, 'Your meaning I do not comprehend\nAs your half is the first half, you must keep him\nHe doesn't want no feeding at my end.'<\/em>\n\nDouble Dimple Daisy was a widow\nAnd by her husband's grave one night she sat\nThey told her that if she waited there till midnight\nHer husband would appear, the silly flat\nBut poor dear Daisy, I declare\nSat on a bunch of nettles there.\n\nAnd when those nettles her began a-tickling\nTo keep a solemn face she did contrive\nAt last she cried, 'Oh, Charlie, do give over\nYour're just the same as when you were alive.'<\/em>\n<\/pre>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
Another comic Music Hall song popular in the 1900s that was remembered by traditional singers in the pubs of southern England in the 1960s – it appears on Neil Lanham\u2019s excellent Comic Songs of the Stour Valley<\/em>, sung both by Rex Gage and Walter Jarvis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was written by Worton David <\/a>and FV St Clair, both separately very successful songwriters. It was a hit for  Sam Mayo<\/a> <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
