He wrote a huge number of songs, many of which he sang himself &#8211; of these around 100 seem to have survived in print or online. I can find out very little about his life as he rates only passing mentions in the standard histories of the halls . This page is largely based on material from contemporary material in the British press and a survey of his songs . <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many  of his songs were topical, with a particular emphasis on a pride in the British character and a robust defence of the British Empire. One could argue that St Clair was exactly the sort of <a href=\"http:\/\/folksongandmusichall.com\/index.php\/2020\/01\/04\/jingoism-and-music-hall\/\">jingoistic <\/a>performer that gave music Hall a bad name!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"511\" height=\"689\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/folksongandmusichall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/follow-the-drum.jpg?resize=511%2C689\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11093 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/folksongandmusichall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/follow-the-drum.jpg?w=511&amp;ssl=1 511w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/folksongandmusichall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/follow-the-drum.jpg?resize=222%2C300&amp;ssl=1 222w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 511px) 85vw, 511px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He wrote and performed a great many martial, nationalist numbers &#8211; the titles alone give some indication of their content (links will take you to the sheet music on external sites)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Gladstone is Captain of the Ship John Bull&nbsp;<\/em>(1881)<\/li><li> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/nla.gov.au\/nla.obj-172648621\/view?partId=nla.obj-172648637#page\/n0\/mode\/1up\">John Bull&#8217;s Letter Bag<\/a><\/em> (1899) <\/li><li><em>Heroes of the Transvaal war <\/em>(1900)<\/li><li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.birmingham.gov.uk\/downloads\/file\/8718\/follow_the_drum\">Follow the Drum&nbsp;<\/a><\/em>(1914)<\/li><li><em>Kitchener! Gone but not forgotten&nbsp;<\/em>(1916)<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His success was such that he had a fishing trawler named after him, an honour not awarded to any other music hall artist that I&#8217;m aware of..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compared to other successful songwriters of this period like <a href=\"http:\/\/folksongandmusichall.com\/index.php\/fred-w-leigh\/\">Fred Leigh<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/folksongandmusichall.com\/index.php\/2912-2\/\">Worton David<\/a>, relatively few of his songs seem to have entered the traditional singing &#8211; I could find only 4. This may be because so may of his songs were topical, but also might reflect a reluctance on the part of collectors to collect his often nationalistic songs, or of singers to sing them to collectors.
