We have a very nice young man who lodges at our house,
He takes things mighty aisy and is quiet as a mouse.
Last week we cooked a chicken, it was only skin and bone,
But as to get our teeth in it —'twas like a paving stone!
So we saved it for the lodger — for Hennessey the lodger;
He's fond of luxuries, bedad, and hasn't much to say,
Though none of us could use it, we didn't want to lose it,
So we saved it for the lodger and he had it for his tay!
My wife makes little fancy things to suit the lodgers taste,
Such as pickled-onion puddings cooked in Micky-Rooney paste,
She ordered from the grocer's half a pound of cloves and spice,
But the blunderin' villin sent her stuff.for killing rats and mice!
So we saved it for the lodger - for Hennessey the lodger;
He's fond of luxuries, bedad, and hasn't much to say,
Though none of us would taste it, sure we didn't want to waste it,
So we saved it for the lodger and he had it for his tay!
We've got some decent neighbours who when sober make no noise,
I wish, begorra! I could say the same about their boys!
The other day the gossoons thought they'd play a little trick,
So through our parlour window threw this illigant half-brick.
So we saved it for the lodger - for Hennessey the lodger;
He's fond of luxuries, bedad, and hasn't much to say,.
The brick we couldn't use-it, but sure we wouldn't lose it,
So we saved it for the lodger (Producing brick from pocket) and he had it for his tay!
My wife's a perfect lady and we seldom disagree,
But yesterday her best she tried to ructions raise with me.
Said I: "Machree, we're by ourselves, we'll keep it till tonight
Its selfish when there's only two to waste a splendid fight."
So we saved it for the lodger - for Hennessey the lodger;
He's fond of luxuries, bedad, and hasn't much to say,.
For a fight we both were itchin, as we stood there in the kitchen,
But we saved.it for the lodger and he had it for his tay!
My brother Mick took very sick through having cracked his head;
He fell into a sort of trance, we thought that he was dead.
We "waked " him like a lord, and thought he'd gone to brighter lands, But up he woke, worse luck! and left a coffin on our hands!
So we saved it for the lodger - for Hennessey the lodger;
He's fond of luxuries, bedad, and hasn't much to say,.
As Mick declined to use it, we didn't want to lose it,
So we saved it for the lodger (taking out a hatchet) and his funeral's today!
In 1889 Lester Barrrett, the Lancashire-based Irish Comedian, wrote the lyrics and had a huge hit with this in the Halls of the North West and Isle of Man.
Tom Costello (who also advertised himself as an Irish comic at the time) was singing it too, perhaps a result of his close working relationship with Felix McGlennon, who was credited with composing the music.
It was collected from the singing of Irish Traditional singer Tommy Donahue by Tom Munnelly in 1984
