THAT'S THE TIME TO CATCH 'EM.
Written and Composed by MURRAY and LEIGH.
Sung by GEORGE BEAUCHAMP.

When you see the "lar-di-dar-di"
Ladies up the West,
No mistake, you think they're angels,
They're so nicely dressed;
Their charming figures look immense,
Their cheeks so rosy red
But, oh! see them in the morning
When they get out of bed

For that's the time to catch 'em! that's the time to catch 'em!
Then you catch 'em when they're in their prime
Just before they've had a wash,
And when the padding's off, be-gosh!
That's the time to catch 'em! that's the time!

[twice]

Once a year the bold Militia
Wear the uniform,
Their manly figures fairly take
The ladies' hearts by storm;
When they go to meet the foe
They're never in the rear
But wait till you see them having
A row with a barrel of beer! (For...)

That's the time to catch 'em ! that's the time to catch 'em !
Then you catch 'em when they're in their prime-
When they've mopped enough to float
Any ordinary boat,
That's the time to catch 'em! that's the time!

When I want a bloater for
My breakfast or my tea,
I never care about them
Freshly captured from the sea;
I keep them in the cistern till
They fairly tiddley-wink,
And when they're a cross between
A heliotrope and pink! (Why ...)

That's the time to catch 'em! that's the time to catch 'em!
Then you catch 'em when they're in their prime
When they're old enough to talk,
And when they're strong enough to walk,
That's the time to catch 'em! that's the time!

All who've had experience
With artful little fleas,
Tell you they can catch the rascals
With the greatest ease;
When you see them hopping,
You can soon get on their track
But wait till they get on the job
In the centre of your back! (For ...)

That's the time to catch 'em! that's the time to catch 'em!
Then you catch 'em when they're in their prime
When they dance the serpentine
Round your ribs and down your spine,
That's the time to catch 'em! that's the time!

A hit in 1896 for  George Beauchamp, written by  Fred Murray and Fred W Leigh, and widely sung in pantomimes in the 1895/96 season. It was later collected from the singing of traditional Suffolk pub singer Arthur Baalam by Neil Lanham and appears on the Helions Bumpstead CD Lavenham.
