The Bobbed Haired Family
Words and Music by Will Hyde. Sung by George West.

Our family, without a doubt, is always up to date
No matter what the passion is with it we’re never late;
As soon as anything comes up we’re on it like a shot
We will be in the fashion! Oh, we are a funny lot!

Father’s had his bald head shingled
Uncle's had his sideboards bobbed
Brother Bill has been and had his toothbrush shaved,
Mother’s been and had her grey hair marcel waved:
Little sister Sue is in the fashion too
This bobbed hair craze has sent her up the tree
And our cat the other night, lost his whiskers in a fight
We’re the bobbed-haired family

Now mother with her Marcel wave she fairly takes the bun,
She’s going on for fifty but she don’t look twenty-one;
The other day it was a lark, we heard a dreadful wail,
Our pup sat on the curling irons and burnt his “Daily Mail”

It’s combs and scissors in our house from morning until night,
To be the first to use them all my sisters have a fight;
We’ve only got one looking glass and on it there’s a crack,
Thro’ using it so much they’ve worn the silver off the back.

The popularity of shorter hairstyles for women was at its height in the second half of the 1920s. “The Bob”-a distinctive style worn by actresses Louise Bro0ks, Clara Bow and others and “shingling”, a style of layering, were particularly popular, these are just some of the “bobbed hair” songs registered for copyright by British and American music publishers in 1926:

  • Bobbed-hair girl
  • Bobbed-hair blues
  • Bobbed haired girls will soon be bald headed
  • The crazy bobbed hair blues
  • Our darling has bobbed her hair
  • My bobbed-hair queen
  • Bobbed-hair woman blues
  • Short dresses and Bobbed hair
  • Since grandma bobbed her hair
  • That bobbed-haired girl of mine

You can hear Manny Aldous sing a fragment(the chorus) in the Veteran Recording’s  collection Comic Songs Sung In Suffolk, which available is for purchase by following the links at https://veteran.co.uk/.
