Tommy Armstrong (1848-1920) was another star of the Tyneside Music Hall, who wrote and performed song in the local Geordie dialect. He was born in 1848 in Shotley Bridge, County Durham. The son of a labourer, childhood rickets left him with lifelong disabilities, though these did not prevent him from starting work in the pits at age 9. He performed recitations, readings and songs in the concert halls and Music Halls of the North East. His works commented on local issues.
