Do you remember how long years ago,
Together as children we played.
I was a lad full of mischief and fun,
And you were a sweet little maid.
Playing at sweethearts how happy were we,
Nor dreamt of the changes in store;
But you became wealthy, too wealthy for me,
But now times have altered once more....
When we went to school together,
I fought all your battles for you;
But riches came between us
Tho' I loved you fondly and true;
But now that times have altered
And poverty knocks at your door.
Won't you let me battle for you
As I used to in days of yore?
You never guessed that I loved you so well,
'Twas pride that forbade me to speak,
How could I venture, my love, dear, to tell,
You had wealth, I had riches to seek.
Now fickle fortune has smiled on me too,
Whilst smiling on me, she has frowned dear, on you,
And scattered your wealth to the wind.
Oft in my wanderings, I've dreamt dear of you,
And those happy days far away,
I saw the old farm and orchard so cool,
Where in school days we oft used to play,
My sweetheart then dear and my sweetheart now
My sweetheart yes always through life
Look up and tell me that your heart is mine
My sweetheart will soon be my wife

A sentimental ballad from the early 20th century. It was recorded several times by different performers, including S Ingrams, Harry Trevor, Arthur Coleman, Jack Desmond and others. There are multiple newspaper reports of the song being performed in amateur concerts in the period before World War 1.
AS Jasper recalled relatives singing the song in his memoir of growing up in Spitalfields before World War 1: A Hoxton Childhood.
In 1971 it was collected by Ian Russell, both from the singing of Charles Green, a traditional singer based in Sheffield, and from the singing of Arthur Howard a traditional singer from Hazlehead near Penistone.
As recorded by Harry Trevor:
