Rogers, EW

EW Rogers (1864-1913) was initially a stage performer but by the early 1880s was a full-time professional songwriter. His hits include Ask a policeman for James Fawn and Following in father’s footsteps for Vesta Tilley. However, his biggest impact was probably the work he did as accompanist and sketch writer for George Robey.

Rogers’ songs which have been sung by traditional singers (the name in brackets is usually the composer) :

  1. Ask a P’liceman (with AE Durandeau)
  2. Call round any old time (with JC Moore)
  3. Come where the booze is cheaper (with AE Durandeau)
  4. Following in father’s footsteps
  5. Gilhooley’s supper party (additional verses for JF Mitchell’s song)
  6. The Lambeth Walk (1899)
  7. A man without a woman
  8. The mystery of a Hansom Cab (with AE Durandeau)
  9. The pretty little girl from nowhere (with John Neat)
  10. Seagull! (with Charles Collins)

All the known songs: This list probably underestimates his full output, but represents my most complete list of his songs that were published as sheet music with cross-references to the Roud Indexes where they exist
