Muggins went out on a motor car once\nAt motor-car work he was only a dunce.\nRan over a p'liceman and mangled a tyke,\nBut still kept going as flash as you like.\nIt's really believed he'd be going still\nBut, quite unexpected, he came to a hill.\nAnd went flying down it in wonderful style\nWas beating all records for over a mile.\n\nThen all of a sudden he stopped,\nAll of a sudden he stopped.\nHe met a brick wall at the bottom, that's all!\nThen all of a sudden he stopped.<\/em>\n\nA charity concert was given last week\nAnd several friends were invited to speak.\nOne after another old ladies did spout,\nOn all sorts of things they knew nothing about.\nThen up got a man with a voice like a horn,\nBig things in his head, and his trousers in pawn.\nFor over an hour they allowed him to jaw,\nTill he said, 'I'll now sing a song on the War!'\n\nThen all of a sudden he stopped,\nAll of a sudden he stopped.\nA brick from the rear caught him under the ear,\nThen all of a sudden he stopped.<\/em>\n\nMy brother Mike often whispered to me,\nThat something 'high up in the world' he would be.\nSo in for the steeplejack bus'ness he went,\n'High up in the world' on a job he was sent.\nA gale it sprang up and the poor chap was hurled\nClean out of his seat, and 'came down in the world.'\nTo those who stood watching and saw him descend,\n\nThen all of a sudden he stopped,\nAll of a sudden he stopped.\nHe spun round and round, till he came to the ground,\nThen all of a sudden he stopped.<\/em>\n\nServant girls are - what they are is well known,\nAnd our servant girl's got ideas of her own.\nSmashing the crocks for a time was her boast,\nNow sliding down bannisters pleases her most.\nI caught her this morning - she didn't see me,\nThe way she enjoyed it was charming to see.\nShe slid down the bannisters, shouting, 'Hooray'\nAs quick as greased lightning, well, part of the way,\n\nThen all of a sudden he stopped,\nAll of a sudden he stopped.\nA little tin-tack chanced to lay in her track\nThen all of a sudden he stopped.<\/em><\/pre>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Alf Gibson (1860-1920) was a northern comedian famous for his Yorkshire accent. He was often billed as the comedian who never moves<\/em> – a description very similar to the billing of Sam Mayo The immobile one<\/em>… He started performing in the mid 1870s as a teenager in a blackface duo with Bob Lambert, the Boston Boys. By the mid-1880s he was performing alone as a serio-comic, and reports in The Era<\/em> indicate that he was a very busy touring performer until the beginning of the World War I. In 1979 it was collected from the singing of Bill Smith by his son Andrew. Bill Smith was a traditional singer who learnt his repertoire in Shropshire pubs in the 1930s. These songs are collected on the MusTrad CD A Country Life <\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
