My wife lately bought Gorgonzola cheese\nShe saw it in a shop marked \u2018cheap'\nShe thought that her loving husband it would please\nTill only to my birthday it would keep\nShe placed that cheese safely in a drawer\nA month went by or perhaps a little more\nSome friends came on my birthday\nAnd the dinner went off great\nBut when the Missus put the Gorgonzola on a plate.\n\nOh, that Gorgonzola cheese\nIt wasn't over healthy I suppose\nFor the old tomcat fell a corpse upon the mat\nWhen the \u201cNiff\u201d got up its nose\nTalk about the flavour of the \u201ccrackling on the pork\u201d\nNothing could have been so strong\nAs the beautiful effluvia that filled our house\nWhen the Gorgonzola cheese went wrong.<\/em>\n\nMy wife felt a bit offended just becos\nThe Company exclaimed \u201cGreat Scott\u201d\nDeclared they'd like to know what animal it was\nAnd asked me if a license I had got\nThe fire went dead clean out, and so did one\nOf my old pals, who came back with a gun\nSaid he \u201cLook out I'm going to fire; that cheese I mean to kill\u201d\nBut when he'd smashed it all to bits, it got more lively still.\n\nWhen those bits had done a waltz about the place\nAt \u2018touch' they soon began to play\nBut when two pieces down the passage had a race\nI thought I'd got hydrophobi-a\nWe burned pastilles, but lor' they did no good\nDestroy that cheese we thought we never should\nBut when someone began to puff a good old \u2018penny smoke'\nThe Gorgonzola cried, \u201cI'm done it's time for me to croak.\u201d<\/pre>\n\n\n\n
A fondly remembered song from the late 19th century, composed and sung by the great  Harry Champion<\/a> with lyrics by Fred W Leigh. It was first published in 1894, and seems to have been immediately popular with amateur singers: there are multiple reports of it being sung in amateur concerts between 1895 and 1900.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the mid-1890s there seem to have been an explosion in jokes and comic songs about Gorgonzola . Cartoons and short stories appeared in the “funny papers”, and  it featured in at least two other Music Hall songs Gorgonzola cheese upon the brain<\/em> (1895, sung by Charles Dixon) and A mother’s advice<\/em> (1895, sung by TE Dunville).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It has been widely sung by traditional source singers, and folk revival singers too, usually introduced as a music hall song, so in my scheme it falls both under the heading “classic” and “folksong from the Halls”<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
