The other night I journey'd with some dear old pals of mine,\nInto a little pub, a small harmonic club;\nA fellow there who thought himself a singer, if you please, \nTried to sing \"The Anchor's Weighed\" in thirteen different keys.\nWe cried \"Encore,\" told him he was fine,\nJust because he bought us lots of wine\nAt half past twelve, a little bit insane,\nSixteen good boys made for home again.\n\nAll along the rails \u2014 what a lively gang!\nShouting out the chorus of every song we sang,\nWe laughed, we chaffed, and told some fairy tales;\nPlaying the harp at two in the morning all along the rail<\/em>\n\nI acted as leader, for I thought I knew my way,\nSo shouted out with \"Now boys, you follow me.\"\nWe came across a policeman who was having forty winks\nTried to sneak his helmet and to make him toss for drinks.\nWe'd no gamps so for nearly half an hour,\nWe tramped and tramped all through a lovely shower.\nWhen all at once I tumbled, I declare,\nWe'd walked fifteen times around a square.\n\nI clutched hold of some railings that were painted overnight,\nGot covered all serene with such a lovely green,\nThe servant girl was waiting up, the saucy little sains;\nI cuddled her, and marked her cotton dress with spots of paint.\nThe wife found out, here was a row of course.\nSacked our girl, and said she'd have a divorce,\nBut afterwards I made it right, What ho!\nAnd swore a swear that never more I'd go.\n<\/pre>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
A song from the repertoire of a comedian who seemed to specialise in drinking songs, Charles Deane<\/a>. It was written by the alarmingly prolific AJ Mills<\/a> with FW Carter <\/a>and was a hit in 1889 in the Halls and pantomimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The song has been incorporated into the traditional songs sung by “Hoodeners” in Kent<\/a> and  Steve Roud recorded James Goodchild singing a fragment (the chorus) in 1976:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
