A hit in the 1870s for the comic Sam Bagnall<\/a>  – the song appeared as sheet music on both sides of the Atlantic, and also in unofficial street literature – broadsides and songsters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The song was remembered by several traditional singers in the second half of the twentieth century, including the great Walter Pardon. It appears a on his  CD Put a bit of powder on it father<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
