Frank W Carter (c1872- 1955) was a songwriter active in the 1890s and 1900s, he provided songs to many of the major stars of the day: including Marie Lloyd, Ella Shields, Pat Rafferty and Frank Seeley. He often composed music for other lyricists including AJ Mills and RP Weston, but was also known to write the words.
So far I have discovered very little about him…
A reasonably complete list of songs of FW Carter which have been collected from traditional singers (only fully confirmed when the link is active, if a song is in italics I am still looking for the lyrics):
- All along the rails (with AJ Mills)
- All Over Me (with AJ Mills)
- Doing my duty (with AJ Mills)
- Has anyone seen my tiddler? (with AJ Mills)
- It won’t last very very long (with RP Weston)
- Running up and down our stairs (with AJ Mills)
- Success to the Old Brigade (with RP Weston)
- Then she started tickle-ing (with AJ Mills)
- There was “two legs” sitting on “three legs” (with RP Weston)
- Watching ’em (with AJ Mills)
- With my little wigger-wagger in my hand (with Fred Earle and Gilbert Wells)
- You’d better come down at once (with AJ Mills)
- You’ve got a long way to go (with AJ Mills)
All the known songs: This list probably underestimates his full output, but represents my most complete list of his songs that were published as sheet music, with cross-references to the Roud Indexes where they exist.
